A big thank you to producing this educational video by Don, a Melbourne University Vet Student going to the 3rd year in 2016. He was to acquire knowledge in animal handling skills, ethics, client communications and practice management. He saw these 4 guinea pigs being treated.
Singaporean guinea pig owners are nowadays more sophisticated, will surf the internet for guinea pig care and treatment. They are much kinder to their guinea pigs than 10 years ago and will seek veterinary treatment.
It was a big surprise to see 4 sick guinea pigs in succession as there are very few guinea pig owners in Singapore compared to dogs and cats. Intern Don combined the 4 videos as an educational video for guinea pig owners on how to take good care for their guinea pigs.

PSA to anyone looking at this video because their guinea pig has the same problem- please take your guinea pig to a vet. We never found out what was wrong with Grenwen, but breathing problems can be a sign of a potentially deadly URI (upper respiratory infection) which needs treatment FAST. Something like this can also be a sign of heart problems which can usually be successfully treated with medication. The guinea pig in the video had no URI or heart problems, and has continued to occasionally have this problem her whole life with no apparent ill effects. But you can't guarantee that's the going to be the case with your pig unless you can rule out these other things.
Something is wrong with Grenwen's breathing- intermittently she will make this noise for hours at a time, sometimes over the course of several days. It is NOT her intentionally making the noise, because she will make this noise all the time in the cage, and she is not trying to make normal guinea pig vocal noises, because I've heard her do those at the same time as wheeze/coo like this. As you can see in this video where she is casually interested in the camera, she is not seemingly distressed even though her breathing sounds awful.
I feel it happens too intermittently for it to be a URI- she's had periods like this on maybe 3 occasions in the last year, including the first one where she was treated with anti-biotics.
There is no discharge from her eyes, no sneezing- the only things I have heard/seen are her coughing a few times, and also once have the hiccups (guinea pig variant of the hiccups, nothing like the human kind.)

Gastroesophageal reflux disease
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), gastric reflux disease, acid reflux disease, or reflux (in babies and young children) is a chronic condition of mucosal damage caused by stomach acid coming up from the stomach into the esophagus (chronic reflux). Occasional reflux causes heartburn, but chronic reflux leads to reflux esophagitis, GERD, and sometimes Barrett esophagus.
GERD is usually caused by changes in the junction between the stomach and the esophagus, including abnormal relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, which normally holds the top of the stomach closed, impaired expulsion of gastric reflux from the esophagus, or a hiatal hernia. These changes may be permanent or temporary.
Treatment is typically via lifestyle changes and medications such as proton pump inhibitors, H2 receptor blockers or antacids with or without alginic acid. Surgery may be an option in those who do not improve. In the Western world between 10 and 20% of the population is affected.

Ginger
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a flowering plant, in the family Zingiberaceae whose rhizome, ginger root or simply ginger, is widely used as a spice or a folk medicine.

We never found out what was wrong with Grenwen, but breathing problems can be a sign of a potentially deadly URI (upper respiratory infection) which needs treatment FAST. Something like this can also be a sign of heart problems which can usually be successfully treated with medication. The guinea pig in the video had no URI or heart problems, and has continued to occasionally have this problem her whole life with no apparent ill effects. But you can't guarantee that's the going to be the case with your pig unless you can rule out these other things. Something is wrong with Grenwen's breathing- intermittently she will make this noise for hours at a time, sometimes over the course of several days. It is NOT her intentionally making the noise, because she will make this noise all the time in the cage, and she is not trying to make normal guinea pig vocal noises, because I've heard her do those at the same time as wheeze/coo like this. As you can see in this video where she is casually interested in the camera, she is not seemingly distressed even though her breathing sounds awful. I feel it happens too intermittently for it to be a URI- she's had periods like this on maybe 3 occasions in the last year, including the first one where she was treated with anti-biotics. There is no discharge from her eyes, no sneezing- the only things I have heard/seen are her coughing a few times, and also once have the hiccups (guinea pig variant of the hiccups, nothing like the human kind.) -

One of the most effective ways to treat acid reflux disease is to avoid the foods and beverages that trigger symptoms. Here are other steps you can take:
Eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day.
Quit smoking.
Put blocks under the head of your bed to raise it at least 4 inches to 6 inches.
Don't eat at least 2 to 3 hours before lying down.
Try sleeping in a chair for daytime naps.
Don't wear tight clothes or tight belts.
If you're overweight or obese, take steps to lose weight with exercise and diet changes.

Singaporean guinea pig owners are nowadays more sophisticated, will surf the internet for guinea pig care and treatment. They are much kinder to their guinea pigs than 10 years ago and will seek veterinary treatment.
It was a big surprise to see 4 sick guinea pigs in succession as there are very few guinea pig owners in Singapore compared to dogs and cats. Intern Don combined the 4 videos as an educational video for guinea pig owners on how to take good care for their guinea pigs.

PSA to anyone looking at this video because their guinea pig has the same problem- please take your guinea pig to a vet. We never found out what was wrong with Grenwen, but breathing problems can be a sign of a potentially deadly URI (upper respiratory infection) which needs treatment FAST. Something like this can also be a sign of heart problems which can usually be successfully treated with medication. The guinea pig in the video had no URI or heart problems, and has continued to occasionally have this problem her whole life with no apparent ill effects. But you can't guarantee that's the going to be the case with your pig unless you can rule out these other things.
Something is wrong with Grenwen's breathing- intermittently she will make this noise for hours at a time, sometimes over the course of several days. It is NOT her intentionally making the noise, because she will make this noise all the time in the cage, and she is not trying to make normal guinea pig vocal noises, because I've heard her do those at the same time as wheeze/coo like this. As you can see in this video where she is casually interested in the camera, she is not seemingly distressed even though her breathing sounds awful.
I feel it happens too intermittently for it to be a URI- she's had periods like this on maybe 3 occasions in the last year, including the first one where she was treated with anti-biotics.
There is no discharge from her eyes, no sneezing- the only things I have heard/seen are her coughing a few times, and also once have the hiccups (guinea pig variant of the hiccups, nothing like the human kind.)

Gastroesophageal reflux illness (GERD) is really a condition in which the stomach contents (meals or liquid) leak backwards from the stomach into the esophagus (the tube in the mouth towards the stomach). This action can irritate the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms.
Causes, incidence, and risk elements
Whenever you consume, meals passes in the throat to the stomach through the esophagus (also known as the food pipe or swallowing tube). As soon as meals is within the stomach, a ring of muscle fibers prevents meals from moving backward in to the esophagus. These muscle fibers are called the reduce esophageal sphincter, or LES.
If this sphincter muscle does not close nicely, meals, liquid, and stomach acid can leak back in to the esophagus. This is known as reflux or gastroesophageal reflux. Reflux might trigger symptoms, or it can even harm the esophagus.
One common reason for acid reflux disease is a stomach abnormality called a hiatal hernia. This occurs when the upper part of the stomach and LES move above the diaphragm, a muscle that separates your stomach from your chest.
Normally, the diaphragm helps keep acid in our stomach. But in the event you have a hiatal hernia, acid can move up into your esophagus and trigger symptoms of acid reflux illness.
These are other common risk factors for acid reflux disease:
- Eating large meals or lying down correct after a meal
- Being overweight or obese
- Eating a heavy meal and lying in your back or bending over in the waist
- Snacking close to bedtime
- Consuming certain foods, like citrus, tomato, chocolate, mint, garlic, onions, or spicy or fatty foods
- Drinking certain beverages, like alcohol, carbonated drinks, coffee, or tea
- Smoking
- Being pregnant
- Taking aspirin, ibuprofen, particular muscle relaxers, or blood stress medications
What Would be the Symptoms of Acid Reflux Illness?
Typical symptoms of acid reflux are:
